- A main-level primary suite, almost every time. Second is a first-floor full bath if you only have a powder room down there. Both solve the same core problem, which is that a two-story house stops working the moment the stairs do. After that, the additions we see pay off are attached in-law or guest suites, an enlarged entry or mudroom you can move through with a walker, and expanding a cramped existing bath instead of just refinishing it.
